2025 is set to be a pivotal year for electric vehicles in India. The year will mark the entry of two major players, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, into the mass-market EV segment, shaking up the industry. Meanwhile, homegrown giants like Tata Motors and Mahindra will continue to expand their electric portfolios. As the EV revolution gains momentum, the affordable EV SUV segment is expected to witness some exciting new launches. Here’s what you can expect from the future of EVs in India’s SUV space.
Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever electric vehicle, the e Vitara, will make its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January 2025. It was globally unveiled in Milan in November. The e Vitara will be available in two battery options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh. The former has an output of 142 bhp and 189 Nm of torque with a single motor. The more powerful 61 kWh version will be available in both single and dual motor options and produce 172 bhp with 189 Nm and 184 bhp and 300 Nm respectively.
Hyundai has confirmed that the Creta EV will be launched on January 17 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. According to reports, the Creta EV will get a 45-50 kWh battery. If it is the former then the battery is smaller than its competition like the e Vitara and goes squarely against the Tata Curvv’s entry-level model. Powered by a single more, the Creta EV is expected to have an output of around 136 bhp and 255 Nm which is the same as the new-generation Kona EV. On a single charge, the Creta EV should offer a range of up to 500 km.
Showcased at the last Auto Expo, Tata Motors will soon make the Sierra EV into a reality. Recently, the production version of this EV SUV was spied and it looked pretty much like the concept revealed in 2023. The new EV is expected to be based on Acti.EV platform, which will give the company the option to offer it in all-wheel-drive (AWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD). Currently, Tata Motors has not yet revealed the battery specs, but the Sierra EV will be packed with features like Level 2 ADAS, maybe a twin infotainment set-up, a panoramic sunroof and dual-zone climate control.
Tata Motors has the most comprehensive EV lineup starting from the Tiago EV to the Curvv EV. The Indian automobile manufacturer is gearing up to further expand its portfolio with the Harrier EV. Based on the patent leak, Tata Motors could offer an AWD or 4×4 version of the Harrier EV along with seven driving modes including traction control. Based on the based on Acti.EV architecture, it could get a 60 kWh battery pack with a range of around 500 km.
Mahindra is working on the 3X0 EV, which will be the most affordable EV SUV in its lineup. Unlike the XUV400, the new EV will be a sub-4-metre vehicle and could be powered by a 35 kWh or even a 40 kWh battery pack. The 3X0 EV will receive subtle design changes from its ICE version like enclosed front fascia, reworked front and rear bumpers, the Mahindra EV badging and a new set of alloy wheels.
