TESLA REPORT CARD: 342 ELECTRIC CARS SOLD IN INDIA IN FY26

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla, which opened its maiden showroom in India in July, retailed 342 units in the country in FY26, according to data from the industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

For reference, the company only sells the Model Y electric SUV in India at present.

Overall, 1,99,923 units of electric passenger vehicles (PVs) were sold in India in FY26, logging a growth of 83.63% year-on-year (y-o-y) over 1,08,873 units in the previous fiscal.

While the overall PV market recorded a historic high of 47,05,056 units in FY26, the electric models had a share of merely 4.25%, pointing towards a relatively slower EV adoption in India.

The electric car space in India is currently dominated by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) offering relatively affordable models, such as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (78,811 units), JSW MG Motor India (53,089 units) and Mahindra & Mahindra (42,721 units).

Among the luxury OEMs, BMW (3,537 units) is the leader, followed by Mercedes-Benz (1,047 units) and Volvo (382 units).

Tesla Model Y

The Model Y has been introduced in India as a completely built unit (CBU) and is offered only in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration.

The electric SUV is available in two variants -- standard RWD priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and Long Range RWD priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The Model Y prices in India are significantly higher than those in overseas markets due to the high import duties on CBUs and place it directly against electric models from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

In India, CBUs priced up to USD 40,000 attract a Basic Customs Duty of 70%. Those above this threshold are taxed 70% Basic Customs Duty in addition to a 40% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess, taking the total tariffs to 110%. The high duties have often been criticised by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

On the performance front, the standard RWD Model Y offers a claimed range of up to 500km on a full charge, while the Long Range version delivers up to 622km. The standard variant accelerates from 0-100kmph in 5.9 seconds, with the Long Range completing the sprint in 5.6 seconds. Both versions have a top speed of 201kmph. With fast charging, the standard Model Y can regain around 238km of range in 15 minutes, while the Long Range variant can add approximately 267km in the same duration.

Tesla network in India

Tesla currently operates experience centres (showrooms) in Gurugram, Mumbai and New Delhi.

The company has five charging stations across India, equipped with 20 superchargers and 14 destination chargers. The charging stations are located at DLF Horizon Centre Gurugram, Tesla Centre Gurugram, Worldmark 3 Aerocity New Delhi, One BKC Mumbai and Nexus Seawoods Mall Navi Mumbai.

Tesla has also opened temporary pop-up experience centres across multiple locations, showcasing the Model Y.
